To celebrate International Women's Day 2020 and the launch of our Iconic Women Changing Mat Collection, we've put together a how-to for creating a nursery full of girl power and feminist-must-haves.
With this becoming a growing trend, we are pleased to be able to offer a guide for your baby girl's nursery.
Choose a plain backdrop of one paint colour for your nursery walls. Try to stay away from cool greys and lean more towards warm grey, beige and taupe - or be brave and go for a brighter colour such as the jade green in the moodboard. Then once your wall colour has been decided, don't be afraid to add in some feminine tones to sit alongside your plain backdrop - you can paint the woodwork and furniture in coordinating or contrasting shades. If you're feeling bold you could go for a burnt orange and bright pink or if your style is more subtle then a dusky pink paired with peach would be a beautiful combination.
Create a gallery wall for your little girl, full of iconic images and bold feminist portrayals. Our favourites are from Faces Of The Club print from MuthaHood, the Strong Girls Club print from the Wonder & Rah X MuthaHood collab, and the Liberté Egalité Sororité Risograph Print by Black & Beech.
Now your walls are beautifully decorated, you can choose some accessories to style your girl's nursery with. Choose natural materials and fabrics, layering them up to create a warm and cosy space. A colourful Berber rug like the one in the moodboard, which is from La Redoute, is a fun and eclectic starting place and this opens up a rainbow of colour for you to add into the nursery.
Why not choose one or two special heirloom pieces that will not only look beautiful in your baby girl's nursery but grow with them and can be central to their decor as they get older. In the moodboard I have shared a macrame weave by talented artist Made Weave Love - their designs are truly special and can be created especially for you. Spend some time on Instagram and Etsy searching for handmade products that are unique and genuinely created from the heart... you will find a treasure trove, I promise!
Use a mixture of materials in your nursery, in our moodboard I've used the incredible Rose Gold Incy Cot from Cottage Toys, a cool cane webbing side table that is bang on-trend alongside a rattan mirror and the now iconic pear wicker storage basket from Ferm Living, that you can get from The Modern Nursery.
The finishing touch - your changing mat. Here at Mini Maison we have collaborated with the incredibly talented Eilidh from Book of Deer to create the Iconic Women Changing Mat collection. The design features strong, incredible women from throughout history including Marie Curie, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Goodall and Malala Yousafzai.
Here at Mini Maison we are working to change the way baby changing mats are perceived - every nursery has one, so let's make them work FOR us and our babies and with our modern nursery decor.
